The GAO published "Veterans Health Administration: Better Data and Evaluation Could Help Improve Physician Staffing, Recruitment, and Retention Strategies,” (GAO-18-124) on Oct. 19, 2017. This report addresses: for the mission-critical physicians, VHA data on how many physicians provide care, and  the extent VHA measures physician workload and productivity; and for all physicians, what evaluations have been done on the effectiveness of its recruitment and retention strategies. http://www.gao.gov/assets/690/687853.pdf


The GAO publishedBiodefense: Federal Efforts to Develop Biological Threat Awareness,” (GAO-18-155) on Oct. 11, 2017.  This report describes: the types of actions that key federal agencies have taken to develop biological threat awareness, and how that information is used to support investment decisions; the extent to which these agencies have developed shared threat awareness; and how DHS's NBACC determines what additional threat characterization knowledge to pursue. http://www.gao.gov/assets/690/687675.pdf

The GAO published “Defense Health Reform: Steps Taken to Plan the Transfer of the Administration of the Military Treatment Facilities to the Defense Health Agency, but Work Remains to Finalize the Plan,” (GAO-17-791R) on Sept. 29, 2017. This report describes DoD’s efforts in developing the draft implementation plan to address the requirements of how the DHA will take administrative responsibility of the MTFs, eliminating duplicative activities, maximizing efficiencies in the activities it carries out and reducing headquarters staff.  http://www.gao.gov/assets/690/687516.pdf


The GAO published Veterans Health Care: Additional Actions Could Further Improve Policy Management,” (GAO-17-748) on Sept. 22, 2017.  In this report, the GAO examines the extent to which VHA has implemented its new definitions for national policy and guidance documents and ensures that national policy and guidance documents are accessible to VISNs and VAMCs.  It also studies how  VHA collects information on local challenges with implementing national policy, including the exemptions granted when policy requirements cannot be met; and local policies are developed and maintained by VISNs and VAMCs, and whether they are aligned with national policies. http://www.gao.gov/assets/690/687305.pdf


The Congressional Budget Office released its analysis of H.R. 1628, the Graham-Cassidy bill, designed to repeal and replace the Affordable Care Act.  In its report, the CBO said the legislation would reduce the on-budget deficit by at least $133 billion and reduce the number of people with comprehensive health insurance that covers high-cost medical events would be reduced by millions compared with the baseline projections for each year during the 2017-2026 period.  For more details, please visit: https://www.cbo.gov/publication/53126
